Premier League Injury and Suspension News: 12th – 14th January 2018

After a chaotic couple of weeks with many Premier League sides playing five games in just fourteen days, some sort of normality is resumed in January with a more traditional fixture list in place.

But the casualties of the manic festive period are numerous, so before you place your bets and set your fantasy teams for the week make sure you get the lowdown on all the latest Premier League injury news here.

Chelsea vs Leicester City (Saturday, 3pm)

With David Luiz fully recovered from his knee injury, Chelsea are essentially at full strength. The only absentee is new signing Ross Barkley, who is building up his fitness after a length lay-off following a hamstring tear.

Leicester have some doubts and they are all defensive players that are suffering: captain Wes Morgan and Danny Simpson (both thigh) plus Robert Huth (match fitness) are definitely out. Christian Fuchs should be able to play after coming down with illness this week, while Jamie Vardy, Vicente Iborra and Adrien Silva have all handed Clade Puel a boost by returning to training.

Crystal Palace vs Burnley (Saturday, 3pm)

Roy Hodgson has plenty of injury problems to deal with at Crystal Palace. As we know, both Scott Dann and Jason Puncheon are out for the season with their knee injuries, while Andros Townsend and Jeff Schlupp are out for the foreseeable future too. Ruben Loftus-Cheek could start here, but Joel Ward is unlikely to feature. Mahmadou Sakho and Connor Wickham will return in February.

Burnley’s injury list can be categorised by definitely out here and possible. Chris Wood, Stephen Ward and Robbie Brady (all knee) and Thomas Heaton will watch on from the stands, and late fitness tests will need to be passed by Scott Arfield, Ben Mee and James Tarkowski.

Huddersfield Town vs West Ham (Saturday, 3pm)

A quintet of Huddersfield players will miss this clash with the Hammers: Collin Quaner (thigh), Martin Cranie (ankle), Chris Lowe (foot), Jon Stankovic (knee) and Elias Kachunga (knee).

David Moyes hasn’t had much luck with injuries since becoming West Ham boss, and his woes continue here. He has three central defenders absent (Jose Fonte, James Collins, Winston Reid), plus Edimilson and Diafra Sakho. Michail Antonio faces a race against time to recover from his groin strain, although Aaron Cresswell and Marko Arnautovic should feature.

Newcastle United vs Swansea City (Saturday, 3pm)

Jamaal Lascelles should be fine to start for Newcastle, although his fellow central defenders Chancel Mbemba and Florian Lejeune look set to be sidelined. Jesus Gamez has undergone ankle surgery and will be waylaid for a while, and Rob Elliot has tweaked a thigh and will be absent for a couple of weeks.

Tammy Abraham is rated as 50/50 for Swansea, although Leon Britton and Sung Yueng-Ki can play if required. Carlos Carvajal has a problem at right back with Kyle Naughton and Angel Rangel absent.

Watford vs Southampton (Saturday, 3pm)

As has been common for Watford this term, they are without eight players for this tie with the Saints: Nathaniel Chalobah, Kiko Femenia, Isaac Success and Tommie Hoban are the long-term absentees, although Will Hughes, Miguel Britos, Craig Cathcart could all return for next week’s trip to Leicester.

March has been pencilled in as the likely return date for Charlie Austin, who has a damaged thigh. In brighter news, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied should pass late fitness tests for Southampton.

West Brom vs Brighton (Saturday, 3pm)

Alan Pardew will have to make do without Nacer Chadli, Kieran Gibbs and James Morrison as West Brom seek a first win in an eternity. Jonny Evans and Matt Phillips should shake off their respective niggles.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton has a full deck to call upon, by and large. His only two absentees are Steve Sidwell and Isaiah Brown, who have missed much of the campaign already.

Tottenham vs Everton (Saturday, 5:30pm)

Toby Alderweireld is progressing with the rehab on his thigh injury, and February is looking to be a likely return date for the Belgian. The prognosis is not so good for Danny Rose, with specialists assessing his knee injury, although Harry Winks should be fit enough to return against the Toffees.

Defensive trio Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines and Michael Keane miss out for Everton: the former duo continue to work on their fitness, while the latter has a nasty cut on his foot. New signing Cenk Tosun has been added to the squad.

Bournemouth vs Arsenal (Sunday, 1:30pm)

Tyrone Mings and Jermain Defoe are the long term absentees for Bournemouth, with the latter now sporting a protective boot on his injured foot. Josh King and Junior Stanislas are both 50/50 hopes of starting here.

The good news for Arsenal fans is that in-form Jack Wilshere’s ankle injury is not as bad as first feared – he may be struggling to be fit for a return to his old stomping ground however. Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey should be okay to feature, although Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Olivier Giroud are definitely out.

Liverpool vs Manchester City (Sunday, 4pm)

After a week in which Philippe Coutinho has left the club, Liverpool fans will be buoyed by the news that Mo Salah is winning his battle to be fit for Sunday’s clash – the Egyptian has trained fully in the past few days. Jordan Henderson and Alberto Moreno aren’t as advanced with their recovery, but both could feature in some capacity.

Pep Guardiola will have to make do without Gabriel Jesus and Vincent Kompany here, while Benjamin Mendy and Phil Foden are probably out for the season.

Manchester United vs Stoke City (Monday, 8:00pm)

The revitalised Ashley Young is suspended for Manchester United, but Antonio Valencia is fit enough to return. Eric Bailly and Michael Carrick are the long term absentees, but Zlatan Ibrahimovic could return within a fortnight.

A trio of Stoke defenders face late fitness tests: Ryan Shawcross, Erik Pieters and Bruno Martins-Indi. Glen Johnson is definitely out, and Jese Rodriguez looks likely to return to parent club PSG soon.
