  • Everton vs Watford – Neither of these sides were prolific last season, and having failed to register on the opening day this could be another excitement-free campaign for Everton and Watford fans. The Toffees have issues in midfield, with Gomes and Delph injured, Schneiderlin suspended and Gueye off to PSG. A lack of creativity there will be matched by the Hornets’ conservatism on the road: they netted just 26 times away from home last term.
  • Norwich City vs Newcastle United – Norwich did not disgrace themselves against Liverpool on the opening day, creating a number of half chances and finally scoring through Pukki. Defensively they are suspect, but Newcastle’s pessimism means that frailty may not be tested. Steve Bruce is counting the cost of an injury list that includes Lejeune, Gayle, Atsu, Yedlin, Carroll and now Shelvey as well.
  • Luton Town vs West Brom – Charlie Austin’s midweek goal was music to the ears of West Brom boss Slaven Bilic, who has a proven scorer to go some way to overcome the loss of Gayle, Rodriguez and Barnes. Aided by the excellent Filip Krovinovic, the Baggies have a goal threat that Luton may struggle to see off. The Hatters have conceded five in two already this term.
  • Sunderland vs Portsmouth – The 1-1 scoreline does not tell the whole story: Sunderland were abject at Ipswich last week, with boss Jack Ross claiming it was the worst that the Black Cats have played under his guidance. Portsmouth, who took four points off Sunderland last season, have started the new campaign in much more positive fashion.
  • Leyton Orient vs Stevenage – After the opening day win over Cheltenham, Leyton Orient were brought down to earth with a bang at Macclesfield last time out. But the O’s will be a handful on home soil this term, and against a poor Stevenage side they can be fancied. The visitors have failed to score this season so far, and in truth they haven’t created any chances of note in 180 minutes of football.
